Lady Talk: Should You Invest in A Lunette Menstrual Cup?
I’d like to preface this post by stating that there’s nothing awesome about shoving a chemically bleached, pointy wad of cotton up your vadge to collect Aunt Flo’s messy sitch. Bleach aside, tampons harbor bacteria (which can lead to toxic shock syndrome!) and they are often culprits of embarrassing leaks and funkadelic odors.
I’m proud to say that I’ve been officially tampon-free/a die-hard menstrual cup-wearer for almost 5 years now. And I gotta tell ya, if you’ve never tried cups, they are game changers! They’re medical-grade silicone receptacles that you insert into your hoo-ha to collect your monthliness and they kick ass for so many reasons.
Menstrual Cup Benefits
- They are easy to use – You just squeeze the cup flat then fold it in half so that the rim makes a ‘C’ shape and insert; you won’t even feel it once it’s in place.
- They’re hygienic and safe – These cups don’t absorb moisture nor do they encourage bacteria to party it up in your nether region.
- They’ll save you mad chedda, yo – The average woman spends between $50-100 per year on disposable tampons and pads. Wouldn’t you rather spend that $$ on weekly vegan donuts and hot cocoa? Thought so.
- They are eco-friendly – A single cup will last you for decades!
- They can be worn for up to 12 hours – That’s such a huge chunk of time, you can just pretend that you’re not even on your period!
- You won’t smell like tuna—ever, because your flo only stanks when the blood gets oxygenated. So… since that never happens (the goo stays inside the cup inside your body), you won’t smell like a fish factory. Amen!
There are so many brands of cups to choose from… how do you decide which one to invest in?
Well, I have a few favs, and I will eventually do a comprehensive roundup, but I gotta showcase Lunette, which was my very first menstrual cup evah. They offer two sizes: model 1 & 2 – model 2, which is the firmer of the two, is for heavier flows and women who have given birth. Model 1 is softer and squishier (and easier to use, imho), making it ideal for women with lower sensitive cervix’s or sensitive bladders. I actually use both sizes depending on where I’m at in my cycle. They have been consistently leak-free, comfortable to wear, and hella convenient. I always stash a cup in my purse. Always.
Only potential setback:
They’re $40 a pop… but when you consider ALL the monies you’re saving each year not having to buy wasteful tamps and pads, it’s a steal. 😉
